What Child is This? pairs a much-loved question with one of England's oldest melodies. The words were written in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix, an English insurance manager who penned the poem during a serious illness, and they were set to the traditional sixteenth-century English tune Greensleeves. The result is a tender nativity carol that has been sung the world over ever since.
